Coaching with Soul: The Transpersonal Approach to Coaching Highly Sensitive People

Jun 19, 2025

Like many others, my attraction to the field of coaching was based on my own personal growth path and quest for greater meaning, purpose and fulfilment. Initially drawn to the idea of supporting others in finding their own meaning, improving their lives, and tapping into their potential, I became a certified coach. I learned a lot of things that were useful to both myself and my clients, still, I sensed there was more and found myself searching for ways to support others on a deeper level.

Why Transpersonal Coaching Resonated So Deeply with Me as a HSP

Before I encountered the term ‘Highly Sensitive Person’, I just viewed myself as sensitive, maybe even “over” sensitive. I had been that way my whole life—deeply moved by sad and touching stories, quick to tears, always picking up on others’ emotions and noticing subtle energy shifts. I often wished I was less sensitive, that I felt things less intensely, and was less irritated by harsh lighting, strong smells, loud noises, and most significantly, less affected by all the pain and injustice in our world.

When I first heard of the trait Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) I immediately identified with it. I took the test and, unsurprisingly, it confirmed that I am a HSP. Even when you already know something about yourself, there’s comfort in learning that you’re not alone, but even more importantly, there’s so much to be gained by the deeper self-understanding that opens up greater self-acceptance and empowerment. I no longer see high sensitivity as some flaw to be hidden and suppressed, or a burdensome quality, but as a gift, maybe even a superpower.

As I moved deeper from personal growth practices into spiritual ones, I increasingly experienced my sensitivity as a doorway into connection with deeper levels of consciousness.

I’ve been sensitive for as long as I can remember, yet, I never really thought about the connection between being a HSP and my coaching until one evening, after watching Elaine Aron’s documentary ‘Sensitive’, I searched for HSP and coaching and found this training. A light went on. Was this what I was missing?

Transpersonal Coaching

Transpersonal coaching honours the full spectrum of human experience, integrating the perspective that we are on a journey of psycho-spiritual transformation moving towards greater wholeness. Transpersonal coaching also presupposes a Self which is distinct from the ego. It embraces the understanding that we are more than our minds, habits, and achievements—we are souls in the process of self-actualisation. For me, this was a profound validation of both my personal path and my professional calling.

Through the training, we learn how transpersonal coaching differs from other approaches. It’s rooted in Transpersonal Psychology, a field that extends beyond conventional psychological theories to include spiritual development, shadow work, and the transcendence of ego-based patterns. It works with all levels of being: physical, emotional, mental, energetic, and spiritual. It’s integrative, holistic, and deeply human.

Transpersonal coaching emphasises presence—not just being with a client, but being with them in a deeply attuned, sacred way. Transformation happens not only through techniques or models, but through the quality of connection and consciousness we bring into each session.

What stands out for me about the transpersonal approach is how natural it feels. Just like when I learned about high sensitivity and felt an immediate knowing—diving into transpersonal coaching just felt right, like finding a missing piece; a map for both supporting others and continuing my own evolution.

An Invitation to Deeper Service

The coaching profession is always evolving and no doubt it will continue to do so. There is a growing recognition that coaching can be more than just an approach to supporting individuals in setting and achieving goals, improving performance, and addressing surface level issues. Coaching is the perfect medium to explore clients’ deeper longings for meaning and transformation, beyond the structures of traditional models.

Many HSPs are on a healing journey or spiritual path. They are naturally attuned to depth, meaning, and subtle realities—and they need spaces where those experiences are honoured. In a world that often feels overwhelming, fast-paced, and disconnected, HSPs bring depth, insight, and compassion—and transpersonal coaching is the sacred container that allows those qualities to flourish.

Transpersonal coaching is more than a technique. It’s a way of being with others that creates real, lasting change—at the level of identity, soul, and consciousness. When HSPs are met with empathy, presence, and respect for their spiritual nature, they remember who they really are. They begin to trust their sensitivity as a gift, not a weakness, and they step into their path with clarity, courage, and peace.

Anyone already working in this field or just entering it can not help but have noticed a surge of interest in coaching in recent years, as well as a proliferation of courses, trainings and certifications. If you’re a coach, therapist, or healing professional who works with sensitive people—or if you’re a HSP yourself feeling called to serve others—you may find yourself searching for something more integrative, soulful, and transformative. If this resonates with you, as it did with me, I invite you to explore the 3-month professional training: Coaching Highly Sensitive People.
